Open Data Albania has conducted a research on the number and causes of abortions in Albania. The gathered data for this indicator refer to all modes of pregnancy interruption, including spontaneous (involuntary miscarriage) and voluntary interruption (clinical intervention). Since 1994 voluntary abortion was legalized in Albania, reducing the cases of maternal mortality as a result of performing abortions in unsafe and primitive conditions.

The main causes of spontaneous abortion are infections, fetal genetic abnormalities and lack of maturity in young mothers. The percentage of spontaneous abortions has been increasing since 2000 which indicates a missing care and health policy toward woman reproductive health.
